Description

Size/Age:

Adult approx 2 cm

Starter colony of 4 adult green banana cockroaches. Panchlora nivea, the Cuban cockroach or green banana cockroach, is a small species of cockroach found in Cuba and the Caribbean, and along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Texas where it is classed as an invasive species. It is found in subtropical or tropical climates.

“The females can grow up to 24 mm and the smaller males are 12 to 15 mm long. Adults have wings and are strong fliers. This pretty little roach is pale green to yellowish green in colour. The nymphs are brown or black in colour and are burrowers.

“The green banana cockroach is an outdoor species and is rarely found indoors and is not considered a pest. The adults can often be found in shrubbery, trees, and plants. The young can be found under logs and other debris. Unusually for cockroaches it is often attracted to both indoor and outdoor lights. The green banana cockroach is nocturnal.

These roaches can be kept in a display terrarium or in a plastic tub. Either way, use two inches or so of coir substrate.

Tub set up

You can mix in a handful or more of hydrated water crystals into the substrate to help keep up the humidity or mist daily. Add a dish for food and one for water crystals. Give them either bark and live plants or if you are rearing in a plastic tub you can use stacked egg cartons on opposite side to the food and water.  The nymphs are brown and burrow, so you won’t really see them much. The adults usually stay in the egg carton. These roaches need ventilation, but not too much-they like things humid, and they like it warm, 80 to 90 degrees. A heat mat on the side away from the food with thermostat is perfect. You won’t need a big bin or enclosure for these roaches-they like things cramped. Do not allow them to dry out.

Terrarium set up

Incorporate plenty of large cork bark, fake and live plants, and hardwood branches to provide climbing and hiding opportunities for the adults. Keep the substrate very damp but not soaking by misting daily or mixing water crystals into the sbustrate.

Ideally a substrate rich in organic material and able to hold moisture well is suitable. Compost or leaf litter on top of coco coir or flake soil work well. A substrate depth of around 20cm (4 inches) is sufficient, but deeper allows adults and nymphs to bury themselves more comfortably and will aid humidity. Adding leaf litter, moss, and botanicals on top of the substrate gives a more natural feel.

Feed the colony twice a week with fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly fruit, along with a good sprinkling of cereals such as chick crumb. Start with a small amount of food and monitor how long it takes the colony to finish it before increasing portions. This approach reduces food waste and prevents outbreaks of  mould, mites, phorid flies and fruit flies.

Stay on top of spot cleaning by removing uneaten food and waste from the enclosure 1-2 times a week. Roaches can be prone to fungal infections when kept in a dirty stale food contaminated environment and this can decimate your colony. Change the substrate once every 4 to 6 months, and consider adding a clean-up crew like springtails and  isopods to help maintain the substrate and keep the tank clean and healthy.
