Description
Clown isopods, Armadillidium klugii, are a beautiful and brightly coloured species, very popular in the isopod-keeping hobby. These isopods display beautifully striking colours; reds, blacks, yellows, and whites. They grow to around 1cm. Clown isopods are not excessively demanding. They thrive in temperatures between 20-28°C (68-82°F) and require less humidity compared to other Armadillidium species. This makes them well-suited for temperate or arid bio-active setups, as well as tropical environments that are well-ventilated but not overly damp. Arnadillidium Klugii are detritivores, munching on a variety of decaying matter like leaves, wood, and even mould and animal faeces. This diet not only sustains them but also contributes nutrients that allow healthy plant growth and reduced mould growth. Like all ‘pods, the clown isopod will thrive with fresh veggies, mixed leaves, and a source of protein and calcium such as dried insects and cuttlebone. This is a highly recommended species, and great for inexperienced keepers due to their hardiness and ease of care.
