Description

Size/Age:

Commonly referred to as the Goliath Bird-Eater Tarantula, Theraphosa blondi is a fascinating species originating from the South American rainforests. This creature is an outstanding addition to tarantula collectors, perfect for enthusiasts. Boasting a leg span that stretches up to 11 inches, the Goliath Bird-Eater, recognized by its grand stature and deep, bristly coat, is among the globe's largest tarantula species. Their impressive size is balanced with a substantial lifespan, with females living as long as 20 years in captivity. This offers a considerable commitment for those wishing to own this unique pet. Contrary to their intimidating name, these titanic critters are not routine bird eaters. Instead, their diet mainly consists of invertebrates, although they can handle larger meals such as small mammals and reptiles in the wild. They exhibit a relatively docile demeanour; however, their urticating hairs can be irritable and bite severe. They should not be handled. The Goliath Bird-Eater Tarantula is characterized by its smooth, dark chocolate brown body. Despite its intimidating name and size, it possesses a shy and generally docile nature. While they may not be the first choice for novice tarantula keepers due to their size and venom, those with more arachnid experience will enjoy owning this arachid. In their natural habitat, Theraposa blondi mostly prey on insects, small rodents, and occasionally small birds. However, in captivity, a diet comprising suitably-sized insects, such as crickets and roaches, is sufficient for their nutritional needs. Creating the perfect habitat is crucial for the well-being of your tarantula. An escape-proof terrarium with a secure lid is vital, ensuring ample space for comfortable movement and a deep, moisture-retaining substrate for burrowing. Suitable substrate materials include coco fiber, peat moss, or a combination of both. As they are native to the rainforest, Goliath Bird Eater Tarantulas thrive in warm and humid conditions. The temperature should ideally range from 75-85°F (24-29°C), maintaining a humidity level of approximately 70-80%. Utilizing a hygrometer and a thermometer can aid in monitoring and maintaining these optimal conditions.
