Description

Size/Age:

Small nymphs, 2cm +

The giant hooded katydid – Siliquofera grandis is known for its striking appearance, featuring a large leaf like hood and leaf-like wings that provide excellent camouflage among the foliage. The body is typically green, mimicking the leaves it inhabits. This species is found in the rainforests of Southeast Asia, including regions like Malaysia and Indonesia. It prefers warm and humid environments with dense vegetation. It is one of the largest katydids in the world with adults reaching lengths of up to 18 centimetres (7 inches), including their wings and antenae. The giant katydid primarily feeds on leaves, flowers, and other plant matter. Its powerful mandibles allow it to chew through tough vegetation and it can be kept by the hobbyist on a diet of bramble, rose, oak, fig and dandelion. It also enjoys fruit and vegetables such as apple, cucumber and lettuce. These katydids are mostly nocturnal, becoming active at night to avoid predators and feed on plants. Their leaf-like appearance helps them blend into their surroundings during the day. After mating, females lay eggs on leaves or in the soil. The nymphs resemble smaller versions of the adults and undergo several moults before reaching maturity. Ideal conditions for Siliquofera grandis include temperatures between 25 to 30 degrees Celsius (77 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit), with high humidity levels typical of their rainforest habitat around 80%
