A stunning species Brachypelma tarantula with striking fire-red markings. A docile, handleable tarantula perfect for beginners.
Brachypelma boehmei, the Mexican fire-leg tarantula is a large-sized tarantula with a leg span of approximately 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 cm) when fully grown. The body is robust and covered in dense, velvety black setae (hairs). The striking feature that gives it its common name is its vibrant reddish-orange legs, which contrast beautifully with the black body. Like most tarantulas from the genus Brachypelma, Brachypelma boehmei is generally docile in temperament, making it a popular choice among tarantula enthusiasts and beginner keepers. It is usually docile, handleable, and not prone to aggressive behavior. These tarantulas are native to the tropical rainforests of Mexico, specifically the Pacific coastal regions of Guerrero and Oaxaca. They inhabit burrows in the ground, often utilizing abandoned rodent burrows or creating their own. The forest floor serves as their natural habitat, providing the necessary humidity and shelter. In general, males typically live for around 3 to 6 years, whereas females can live significantly longer, averaging between 10 to 20 years or even more in some cases. It’s not uncommon for female tarantulas, including the Mexican Fire Leg Tarantula, to reach or exceed the 20-year mark with proper care. These tarantulas are known to be hardy and adaptable, making them more forgiving of minor mistakes in care. They can tolerate a range of temperature and humidity conditions, making it easier for beginners to maintain appropriate environmental conditions. The Mexican fire leg tarantula needs a temperature range of around 70-80°F (21-27°C) within their enclosure. A small temperature drop during the night is generally acceptable. The humidity level should be around 40-60%, simulating the arid desert conditions of their natural habitat. This can be achieved by occasionally misting the enclosure regularly and providing a water dish for drinking. Overall, Brachypelma boehmei, the Mexican Fire Leg Tarantula, are a beautiful tarantula loved for its striking appearance, docile temperament, and relative hardiness, making it an appealing choice for both beginner and experienced tarantula keepers alike.
