Description

Size/Age:

The sunny stick insect, Sungaya inexpectata, is another fascinating stick insect species that has caught the attention of entomologists and pet owners. This stick insect is native to the Philippines, and are notorious for playing dead and laying at the bottom of their enclosure. The sunny stick insect can reach lengths of about 3 to 4 inches and boasts a brown body with white markations. These insects are generally docile and easy to handle, which makes them popular pets. They enjoy climbing and will readily explore twigs and branches placed in their enclosure. Sungaya inexpectata primarily feeds on leaves, favouring oak and bramble. Females can lay eggs without needing a male for fertilisation. However, the presence of a male encourages sexual reproduction. The eggs, resembling small seeds, are usually dropped onto the substrate in their enclosure and can take a few months to hatch into nymphs. Keep these critters between 75-85°F (24-29°C) and in an environment with a humidity level ranging from 60-80%. Mesh enclosures are great for this species.
